As the MENARAH Network continues its mission to promote healthy ageing and improve the quality of life for older adults in the MENA region, it is essential to highlight the invaluable role of informal carers. In a region where family remains the cornerstone of caregiving, empowering these caregivers with the right tools and knowledge is vital. This blog introduces Reach by Nightingale Hammerson, a digital platform offering practical advice to support ageing individuals and their carers. With digital literacy and smartphone access on the rise across the MENA region, MENARAH is committed to leveraging such innovative solutions to foster independent and dignified living for older adults, while easing the caregiving journey for families.

We know that caregiving can be a daunting journey, but with the right tools and support, it doesn’t have to be. Reach by Nightingale Hammerson aims to remove the guesswork, reduce anxiety, and empower individuals, families and caregivers with the confidence to provide effective care. Nightingale Hammerson has been at the forefront of exceptional residential care in England for over 180 years. Within our two outstanding care homes, we’re proud to offer a comprehensive range of services for older adults, including residential care, dementia care, nursing, rehabilitation, respite, and palliative care.

As the years have passed, we have noticed that a shift has occurred: more people are choosing to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. While this decision brings comfort and familiarity, it often comes with unaddressed care needs. Many families find themselves stepping into caregiving roles without the training or qualifications to navigate the complexities of ageing, leading to stress and uncertainty.

To address this growing need, we created Reach by Nightingale Hammerson, a digital platform designed to provide individuals and their caregivers with free, practical advice for ageing well at home. In a world overflowing with online advice, Reach serves as a one-stop shop, offering clear and reliable expert guidance on specific topics exactly when you need it.

Our practical advice covers a range of topics, including:

  • Mobility: Tips to support daily movement such as climbing the stairs or getting into a chair
  • Sleep: Guidance on nighttime routines, addressing sleep problems, and creating a restful environment, along with other helpful resources
  • Nutrition: Advice on staying hydrated, using adaptive tools, and much more to support healthy eating habits
  • ارتباط: Creative activities specifically designed for individuals living with dementia, plus additional ideas to stay connected
  • التمويل: Discover options for funding care

Here are some examples of the practical advice that we have produced.

Adaptive Cutlery

As we age, conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, arthritis, and others can affect mobility and dexterity. This often leads to a loss of independence, which may accelerate declines in motor skills, cognitive function, and an individual’s sense of self. To address these challenges, Reach by Nightingale Hammerson has created a series of videos showcasing practical solutions. The video above highlights the use of adapted cutlery, specifically designed to assist with eating difficulties, empowering individuals to maintain their independence for as long as possible.

Climbing the Stairs

Although climbing the stairs may not be a daily activity for everyone, it is often an unavoidable one. Since climbing the stairs can be tiring and potentially lead to injuries, it’s important to approach it with care. Reach by Nightingale Hammerson has produced a video to illustrate simple and safe methods for older people to climb the stairs with confidence. These steps not only help older adults stay safe but also provide peace of mind to their relatives, knowing they can navigate stairs securely.

Staying Hydrated

Did you know? As we age, our natural sense of thirst diminishes, making regular fluid intake essential. Contrary to common belief, hydration isn’t just about water, many foods and beverages also contribute to fluid intake.

If someone is eating poorly or experiencing unintentional weight loss, nutrient-rich drinks like milky hot beverages, milkshakes, or smoothies can provide hydration along with essential protein, calories, vitamins, and fibre.

This blog complements MENARAH’s previous initiatives, such as the ‘الحركة نعمة‘ campaign, which highlighted the importance of physical activity for healthy ageing in the MENA region, and the promotion of telemedicine solutions to enhance care for older people through accessible digital healthcare. By supporting innovative tools like Reach by Nightingale Hammerson, MENARAH continues to advocate for practical and effective approaches to ageing with dignity and independence in the region.
